The question is not just dentures or no dentures
Most people who come to us about dentures have already decided that something has to change. What they have not decided, usually because nobody has explained it clearly, is which kind.
That is the conversation worth having, because the gap between a conventional denture and an implant-supported one is enormous in daily life. Same category on paper. Completely different experience at dinner.
Here is the plain comparison, and then how to figure out which one fits your mouth and your budget.
Your four real choices
Full dentures. A complete arch replacing all upper or lower teeth, resting on the gums and held by suction and fit. This is the most affordable path to a full set of teeth, and for many people it is the right answer. Uppers generally hold well because the palate creates suction. Lowers are harder, because there is no palate and the tongue is constantly working against them.
Partial dentures. For when you still have healthy teeth worth keeping. A partial fills the gaps and clasps to your remaining teeth. It preserves what you have, which is always the goal when it is possible.
Implant-retained overdentures. Typically two to four implants per arch with attachments that let the denture snap on and lift off for cleaning. This is the upgrade that solves the lower-denture problem. It stays put while you eat and talk, and it costs considerably less than a fixed full-arch bridge.
Fixed implant bridges, including All-on-4. Four implants supporting a full arch that never comes out. The closest thing to natural teeth, with the highest chewing power and the highest cost.

How getting dentures actually goes
If teeth need to come out first, that usually happens at the start, and we can provide an immediate denture so you are not without teeth while the gums heal. That healing takes a few months and the gums change shape as they do, which is why an immediate denture usually needs relining or replacing once things settle. That is normal, not a mistake.
From there it is a series of appointments: impressions or a digital scan, a bite record, a try-in where you see the teeth set in wax and tell us what you think, then delivery and adjustments. Speak up at the try-in. Changing the shape, size, or shade of the teeth is easy at that stage and expensive later.
Expect adjustment visits after delivery. New dentures create sore spots, they change how you speak for a couple of weeks, and learning to eat with them takes practice. Every patient goes through it. Adjustment appointments are part of the process, not a sign something went wrong.
If your lower denture will not stay put
This is the most common complaint we hear, and it is not a fit problem you can fix by trying harder. Lower jaws simply do not offer the surface area that uppers do, and the ridge continues to shrink over the years as bone resorbs.
Two to four implants change the whole equation. The denture snaps onto them, and the difference in what you can eat and how confidently you can talk is the thing patients mention most at follow-ups.
We place those implants using Image Guided Implantology. Your jaw is scanned in 3D, each implant is planned by computer before surgery, and a surgical guide holds the placement on that planned path. Placement time drops from roughly 50 minutes to about 10 to 15 minutes per implant, which for an older patient sitting in a chair is a meaningful difference. Candidacy depends on your bone volume, which the 3D scan shows us.
What dentures cost and how to pay for them
Cost varies widely by type, by whether extractions are needed, and by which materials you choose. Dentures at our Fort Smith office are quoted by type, and implant-supported options are quoted separately after a 3D scan. You get a written breakdown of your options before you commit to anything.
Most dental insurance covers dentures as a major service, commonly around 50% after deductible and subject to your annual maximum, and many plans have a replacement clause limiting how often they will pay. We are in network with Delta Dental Premier, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, United Concordia, Principal, Sun Life, Healthchoice, America's, and Assurant, and we will verify your benefits before treatment.

How much do dentures cost in Fort Smith?

No. When extractions are needed, we plan an immediate denture that goes in the same day the teeth come out, so you are not without teeth at any point. Your gums will reshape over the following months as they heal, so that immediate denture typically needs relining or replacing once everything has settled. We build that into the plan and the pricing up front so it is not a surprise cost later.
How long does it take to get used to dentures?
Most people need two to four weeks to adapt to speaking, and longer to feel confident eating. Start with soft foods cut small, chew on both sides at once, and expect a few sore spots in the first week or two that we adjust. Reading out loud at home genuinely helps with the speech part. If something still feels wrong after several weeks, come see us. Dentures should not be uncomfortable long-term.
Can I eat normally with dentures?
With a conventional upper denture, most people manage well. With a conventional lower denture, expect real limits, and sticky or very hard foods are the usual troublemakers. This is the single biggest reason patients move to implant-supported dentures, where chewing power is dramatically better because the denture is anchored rather than resting. If eating is your main frustration, tell us that first, because it changes the recommendation.
Are implant-supported dentures worth the extra cost?
For lower dentures in particular, most of our patients who make the switch say yes without hesitation. You get stability while eating and talking, no adhesive, and less bone loss over time because the implants keep stimulating the jaw. Whether it is worth it for you depends on your budget and how much your current denture is limiting you. How long do dentures last, and how do I care for them?
Conventional dentures typically need relining every few years as your jaw ridge changes shape, and replacement somewhere in the five to ten year range depending on wear and fit. Clean them daily with a denture brush and cleaner rather than regular toothpaste, which is abrasive, and take them out at night unless we tell you otherwise. Keep coming in for checkups even without natural teeth, because we monitor your gums, your ridge, and your oral tissues.
