You want your teeth to look better. You do not want them to look fake.

Almost every person who asks about cosmetic work here says a version of the same thing. They want to stop covering their mouth in photos. They do not want the flat, oversized, too-white look they have seen on somebody else.

That is a reasonable fear, and it comes from a real place. A lot of cosmetic dentistry is done to a template. Same shade, same shape, same length, regardless of whether the person is 26 or 62, has a narrow face or a broad one, a high smile line or a low one.

We start from the opposite direction. Your lip line, the shape of your face, how much tooth actually shows when you talk, your bite, your age, and how much you want to change. Then we pick the treatment that gets there with the least amount of tooth removed.

Sometimes that means veneers. Often it means something much smaller.

Five paths, from a weekend to a full smile makeover

Teeth whitening. The least invasive thing we do, and for a lot of people it is the only thing they need. Professional whitening reaches shades that store-bought strips do not, and custom trays keep the gel on your teeth instead of on your gums. If sensitivity has scared you off whitening before, tell us. There are ways to manage it. Whitening does not change the color of existing crowns, veneers, or fillings, which matters for sequencing if you are doing more than one thing.

Dental bonding. Tooth-colored composite sculpted directly onto the tooth, usually in a single visit, with little or no drilling. It handles chips, small gaps, worn edges, and one tooth that sits slightly out of line with its neighbors. It costs a fraction of a veneer and is reversible. Bonding does stain over years and is not as strong as porcelain, so it is a trade of longevity for cost and conservatism.

Porcelain veneers. Thin shells bonded to the front of your teeth. Veneers are the right answer when you need to change shape, length, alignment, and color at the same time, or when a tooth is discolored from the inside and will not respond to whitening. This is the most transformative option and the most permanent, because a small amount of enamel is usually removed. We will not talk you into eight veneers when four solve the problem, and we will not do veneers at all on a bite that is grinding itself apart until we deal with the grinding.

Smile makeovers. A plan rather than a procedure. A makeover sequences several treatments in the right order, which might mean aligners first to move teeth into position, then whitening, then a small number of veneers or crowns to finish. Moving a tooth is almost always more conservative than grinding it down to fake the position with porcelain. This is the difference between a designed result and a purchased one.

Botox. We use Botox cosmetically for the lines around the upper lip, the mouth, and between the brows, which is where a lot of people notice age before they notice their teeth. We also use it therapeutically for TMJ pain and clenching, where relaxing an overworked jaw muscle may reduce headaches, jaw soreness, and the wear that grinding puts on your teeth and any cosmetic work you have had done. Results vary, and Botox is temporary by design, generally lasting a few months.

Photos, a scan, and a plan you see before anything is permanent

The first visit is a conversation and a records appointment. We take a full photo series and a 3D scan, look at your bite and jaw joints, and ask what specifically bothers you when you look in the mirror. That last question matters more than it sounds, because the thing patients want fixed is frequently not the thing a dentist would pick unprompted.

From there you get a written plan with options and fees. For larger cases we can show you a preview of the proposed result before we begin, so you are approving a design rather than trusting a description.

Cosmetic treatment is elective and results vary from person to person. Candidacy depends on the health of your teeth and gums, which is why we check for decay, gum disease, and grinding first. Building something beautiful on an unhealthy foundation is how people end up paying twice.

What it costs, and a membership that makes upkeep predictable

Cosmetic work is generally not covered by dental insurance, though the restorative portion of some cases can be. We tell you which parts of your plan have a chance at coverage and which do not, before you start.

For payment, CareCredit offers no-interest terms of 6 to 24 months on treatment over $200 and longer terms at 14.90% to 17.90% APR. Cherry approves in about 30 seconds. Proceed Finance stretches up to 96 months with rates from 3.99% and payments starting around $157 a month. HSA and FSA funds apply to treatment with a health purpose, such as TMJ Botox.
